A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
